Media Types

Question : What is the difference between DVD+R and DVD-R media? Is it compatible with my PioneerA11XL?

Answer : Back when DVD recordable media was announced, there was a big difference between DVD+R and DVD-R discs. This was due to compatibility issues on DVD players and DVD-ROMs. Unlike compact discs, there are two groups regulating the standards of DVD media. DVDForum took charge of DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM while DVD+RW Alliance handled the DVD+R and DVD+RW formats. DVD-R and DVD-RW has a higher compatibility rating than the latter format.

With improved drive firmware and technology, this issue is rather irrelevant anymore. Burned DVD discs can be read in almost every DVD reader, writer and players as long as it is in the proper Book type.
