Using PowerPoint in Linux

Question : Is it possible to open and view PowerPoint files on a Linux machine ?

Answer : While PowerPoint -- the presentation program in the Microsoft Office suite -- is not available for Linux, you have some options.

If the PowerPoint presentation file is less than 10MB in size, you should be able to upload the file from the computer to the Google Docs site ( docs.google.com ) and see it there.

To do this, you need a free Google account and a compatible web browser like Firefox for Linux.

The main Google Docs page has a large blue button to click for signing up for the Google account ; if you already have a Gmail account, you can just use that name and password and sign into Google Docs. If the computer has a spare 400MB of disk space and at least 256MB of memory, another option is to download the free OpenOffice.org suite.

The suite includes the Impress presentation software that can open and edit PowerPoint files.

The software is already included in the Ubuntu distribution of Linux, but can be downloaded for other Linux distributions at download.openoofice.org.

Although a bit more technical, the free Wine program ( www.winehq.org ) lets Linux run many Windows applications that don't have alternatives like OpenOffice.org.
