Question : I bought a new motherboard together with an AMD Sempron 2800+ processor. My question is if it's safe to install the bundled heatsink without applying thermal paste. Will the processor run fine?

Answer : It is not recommended to leave the processor running without any thermal paste. The function of the thermal paste is to give as much contact as possible between the processor and heatsink. This way, the heat will be transferred over to the heatsink and be dissipated off either passively or with the help of a fan. Most heatsinks come with a pre-applied layer of thermal paste, scrape this off and replace it with a reputable brand of thermal paste instead.
